Filmen Negra (2020) er et personlig og samtidig kollektivt arbeid hvor Medhin Tewolde Serrano undersøker hva det betyr å leve i Mexico som svart kvinne. Filmen etterfølges av en samtale mellom kunstneren Medhin Tewolde Serrano og kunstner og BHMN-produsent Maria Habiyambere.
Medhin Tewolde Serrano er eritreisk-meksikansk og bosatt i Chiapas i Mexico. Etter utdanningen innen dokumentarfilm ble hun opptatt av å fortelle andres historier. Siden da har hun viet seg til å legge til rette for prosesser med deltakende video og kommunikasjon i lokalsamfunn. Arbeidet med disse prosessene har også kastet lys over hennes egen prosess med å forme sin identitet som kvinne med afrikansk opphav; dette har ført henne tilbake til filmen, overbevist om dens transformative kraft og viktigheten av å skape nye fortellinger og fremstillinger av mennesker med afrikansk opphav, samt deres motstand og kamper. Hun har regissert dokumentarfilmen «Negra» (2020), animasjonskortfilmen «Nyanga» (2023) og dokumentarkortfilmen «Carabalí» (2026).For tiden arbeider hun med utviklingen av sin andre dokumentarfilm, «Diario de Assefaw». Hun har også vært en del av koordineringsteamet for «Ocote: Festival de Cine en Chiapas» siden 2016.
Maria Grazia Ines Habiyambere er en Oslo-basert multikunstner, kulturarbeider og produsent med bakgrunn i sosialt arbeid, lyd- og musikkproduksjon og litteraturvitenskap. I sin praksis utforsker hun temaer som svarthet, interseksjonalitet, klimarettferdighet og avkolonisering.
Hun er grunnlegger av Art Club med Maria Habiyambere, produsent for Black History Month Norway og arbeider ved Kunstnerforbundet. Hennes arbeider har blitt vist blant annet på Kunsthall Oslo, Fotogalleriet og Gamle Munch, og hun holder jevnlig workshops, foredrag og deltar i panelsamtaler om kunst, bærekraft og sosial rettferdighet.

A personal yet collective work in which Medhin explores what it means to live in Mexico as a Black woman. Following five Afro-descendant individuals in southern Mexico, the film addresses themes of racism, resistance, self-acceptance, and the celebration of identity.
The screening will be followed by a conversation with artist Medhin Tewolde Serrano and artist and BHMN producer Maria Habiyambere.
Medhin Tewolde Serrano is Eritrean-Mexican and resides in Chiapas, Mexico. After her training in documentary filmmaking, she became concerned about telling other people's stories. Since then, she has dedicated herself to accompanying participatory video processes and community communication. Accompanying these processes reveals to her own process of identity construction as an Afro-descendant woman, and this makes her return to cinema, convinced of its transformative power and the importance of creating new narratives and representations of Afro-descendants, their resistance and struggles. She directed the documentary feature "Negra" (2020), the animated short "Nyanga" (2023), and the documentary short "Carabalí" (2026). She is currently in the development stage of her second documentary feature, "Diario de Assefaw." She has also been part of the coordination team of "Ocote: Festival de Cine en Chiapas" since 2016.
Maria Grazia Ines Habiyambere is an Oslo-based multidisciplinary artist, cultural worker and producer with a background in social work, sound and music production, and literary studies. Her practice explores themes of Blackness, intersectionality, climate justice and decolonisation.
She is the founder of Art Club with Maria Habiyambere, a producer for Black History Month Norway, and works at Kunstnerforbundet. Her work has been exhibited at venues including Kunsthall Oslo, Fotogalleriet and the former Munch Museum, and she regularly facilitates workshops, gives talks and participates in panel discussions on art, sustainability and social justice.
