I foredraget «Visual Narratives -- Living History», forteller illustratør og historiker Joel Christian Gill (USA) om arbeidet sitt med å skape historier for å bygge forbindelser med lesere gjennom empati, medfølelse og, til syvende og sist, menneskelighet.
Gill, som er professor i «Visual Narratives» ved Boston University, vil også fortelle om arbeidet med den grafiske roman-adaptasjonen av Ibram Kendis National Book Award-vinnende bok Stamped From the Beginning: The Definitive History of Racist Ideas in America, utgitt av Ten Speed Press (2023).

Joel Christian Gill er Boston Universitys første leder for mastergrad i visuell narrativ og førsteamanuensis ved CFA School of Visual Arts. Han tok sin MFA fra Boston University og sin BA fra Roanoke College. Gill er også tegneserieskaper og historiker som snakker nasjonalt om viktigheten av å dele historier. Han er forfatteren av den anerkjente memoarboken Fights: One Boy's Triumph Over Violence, som ble omtalt som en av de beste grafiske romanene i 2020 av The New York Times, og som han ble tildelt Cartoonist Studio Prize i 2021 for. Han skrev tekstene og tegnet bildene til Fast Enough: Bessie Stringfield’s First Ride og den prisbelønte grafiske romanserien Strange Fruit: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History, samt tre bind av Tales of The Talented Tenth, som forteller historiene til Bass Reeves, Bessie Stringfield og Robert Smalls.

In the lecture "Visual Narratives -- Living History", illustrator and historian Joel Christian Gill (US) reflects on his work creating stories to build connections with readers through empathy, compassion and, ultimately, humanity.

Joel Christian Gill is the Inaugural Chair of Boston University’s Master of Fine Arts (MFA) in Visual Narrative and Associate Professor in the CFA School of Visual Arts.
He is also a cartoonist and historian who speaks nationally on the importance of sharing stories. He is the author of the acclaimed memoir Fights: One Boy's Triumph Over Violence, cited as one of the best graphic novels of 2020 by The New York Times and for which he was awarded the 2021 Cartoonist Studio Prize. He wrote the words and drew the pictures for Fast Enough: Bessie Stringfield’s First Ride and the award-winning graphic novel series Strange Fruit: Uncelebrated Narratives from Black History, as well as 3 volumes of Tales of The Talented Tenth, which tell the stories of Bass Reeves, Bessie Stringfield and Robert Smalls.
